Sindurmati Tirthadham grew up around an old dighi in Sindurmati mouza, on the border of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts. Legend says a zamindar named Raj Narayan Chakraborty dug it hoping for children, and named it after his daughters Sindur and Moti. On Ram Navami in the month of Chaitra a big fair is held, and pilgrims from far away take a holy dip in the tank. When the dighi was re-excavated in 1975, old coins and images were found, now kept in the National Museum. Outside fair days it is a quiet, tree-lined place.
How to get there
From Lalmonirhat town take an auto or CNG south-east towards the Kurigram border; ask for Sindurmati.
Good to know
Visit at Ram Navami (Chaitra, around March–April) for the fair, but expect big crowds. Respect bathing pilgrims' privacy when taking photos.
