Many tea workers in Habiganj descend from communities brought from central and eastern India in the 19th century, and they have kept their own languages and festivals. Phagua, celebrated around Holi in spring, fills the estates with coloured powder, drumming and group dances. Some estates and community groups now host public gatherings where visitors can watch.
