Mymensingh Gitika Ballads
মৈমনসিংহ গীতিকা
Folk ballads of love and loss from this region, collected a century ago and still sung today.
In the early 20th century, Chandra Kumar De collected ballads sung by villagers of greater Mymensingh, and Dinesh Chandra Sen published them as the Mymensingh Gitika. Stories such as Mahua and Malua tell of love, caste and fate, often with strong women at their centre. The ballads have been translated into many languages and are staged as plays and dance. Local cultural groups still perform them at fairs and festivals.
