Khunia Dighi is a big pond of about six acres in Ranisankail upazila. In 1971 the Pakistani army and local collaborators brought prisoners from their Ranisankail camp here, tortured and shot them, and threw the bodies into the water. Around a thousand people are believed to have been killed, and it is the largest mass-killing site in the district. A memorial now stands on the bank. It is a sombre, quiet place to understand what the war meant in this corner of the country.
