Burima's Sweets
জামালপুরের বুড়িমার মিষ্টি
A sweet shop in Amlapara, Jamalpur town, started by a woman in the late 1940s and still run by her family.
Burima Mishtanna Bhandar began in Jamalpur town in the late 1940s as a small doi-chira shop opened by Amolabala Saha, whom everyone called Burima. Jute workers were her first regulars, and soon the whole town was buying her sweets; she made them, served customers and kept the accounts herself until she died in 2004. Her grandchildren now run the shop in Amlapara. It makes a dozen or so sweets, including chhoto golla, chomchom, kalojam, para sandesh, date-gur sweets and an unusual green-chilli sweet.
