The Jamuna on Jamalpur's western side is braided into many channels around low sandy islands called chars. People living here move with the river, rebuilding when floods shift the land. In the dry season they grow peanuts, chilli, maize and pulses on the sand. A boat trip with a local guide shows a side of rural Bangladesh few visitors see.

How to get there

From Islampur or Dewanganj, hire a boat at a riverside ghat.
