Jute Harvest

Faridpur is one of Bangladesh's leading jute districts, and the crop shapes village life from July to September. Farmers cut the tall stalks, sink them in ponds and canals to ret, then strip the fibre by hand. Golden bundles hang drying on bamboo frames and bridges, and the stripped sticks are used for fuel and fencing. The smell of retting jute is part of the season.

Good to know

Ask before photographing people working; the best scenes are on rural roads early morning.
