Sri Angan (Prabhu Jagadbandhu's Ashram)

শ্রীঅঙ্গন (প্রভু জগদ্বন্ধুর আশ্রম)

The ashram in Faridpur town where the saint Prabhu Jagadbandhu lived and preached, and where eight monks were killed in 1971.

Sri Angan, in the Goalchamot area of Faridpur town, is the ashram of Prabhu Jagadbandhu, a Hindu holy man of the late 19th and early 20th centuries whose teaching inspired the Mahanam Sampradaya. He spent much of his life meditating and preaching here, and devotees come from across Bangladesh and India, especially for his birth anniversary. On 21 April 1971 the Pakistani army entered the ashram and killed eight monks who were chanting inside; a memorial remembers them. The compound is calm, with temples, a courtyard and the steady sound of kirtan.

How to get there

Rickshaw or auto from anywhere in Faridpur town to Goalchamot; Sri Angan is well known locally.

Good to know

Take off your shoes inside the temple area and keep your voice low during kirtan. Ask before photographing worshippers.
