Buffalo Herding on the Chars

চরের মহিষের বাথান

Herders who live with their buffalo on the shifting coastal islands, moving with the tides and seasons.

On the newly formed chars of the Meghna estuary, herders keep buffalo in open-range camps called bathan. The animals graze on grass and wade through tidal creeks, while herders live in simple shelters and milk them daily. This old way of life supplies the region's famous curd, and is a striking sight for anyone visiting the islands around Hatiya and Nijhum Dwip.

Good to know

Ask herders before approaching the animals; buffalo can be protective.
