Nijhum Dwip

নিঝুম দ্বীপ

A remote mangrove island south of Hatiya, where herds of spotted deer step out of the forest at dawn.

Nijhum Dwip, the 'silent island', formed from silt in the Meghna estuary and was later planted with mangroves. It is now a national park, and the spotted deer introduced decades ago have multiplied into large herds. Early mornings at the forest edge or along tidal creeks are the best chance to see them, along with waders and migratory birds in winter. The island has a few simple resorts and guesthouses.

How to get there

Reach Hatiya by launch from Dhaka or by boat from Noakhali's Chairman Ghat, cross Hatiya by motorbike to Moktaria Ghat, then a short boat ride to Nijhum Dwip.

Good to know

Plan for at least one night. Avoid the monsoon months when the sea is rough and launches may be cancelled; follow weather signals. Bring cash and a torch.
