Lalon Shah's shrine and akhra, Cheuria

ছেঁউড়িয়ায় লালন শাহের মাজার ও আখড়া

The resting place of the mystic singer Lalon, where Bauls sing his songs late into the night.

Lalon Shah, the 19th-century mystic poet whose songs question caste and religious division, lived and died at Cheuria on the edge of Kushtia town. His domed white shrine and the akhra around it are a place of pilgrimage for Bauls and fakirs. On most evenings singers sit with ektara and dotara and perform his songs. A museum and academy on the grounds tell his story.

How to get there

A rickshaw or auto from Kushtia town or railway station, about 10–15 minutes.

Good to know

Sit and listen respectfully; offer a small donation if you record singers. Remove shoes near the shrine.
