This mosque in North Karapur is said to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century by Hayat Mahmud, a local zamindar who was exiled to Penang for resisting the British and built it after his return. Its design follows the Kartalab Khan Mosque in Old Dhaka: the prayer hall sits on a raised platform reached by a wide stair, with rooms below now used as a madrasa. Three ribbed domes crown the roof, the middle one larger, and the white walls carry fine floral plasterwork. A pond lies in front. It is protected by the Department of Archaeology but sees few visitors from outside.
How to get there
From Barishal city take an auto to Karapur via Kashipur or Nabagram crossroads (about 20–30 min).
Good to know
It is an active mosque, so dress modestly and avoid prayer times. Late afternoon light on the white facade and pond is lovely.
