Jamdani Weaving
জামদানি বুনন
Weavers in Rupganj and Sonargaon hand-weave fine muslin saris with patterns built thread by thread.
Jamdani is a fine cotton cloth in which motifs are woven into the fabric by hand on a pit loom, not printed or embroidered. It descends from the famous Dhaka muslin, and UNESCO recognised the art of Jamdani weaving in 2013. Two weavers sit side by side and insert each pattern thread with a bamboo stick, so a good sari can take weeks or months. Villages in Rupganj and Sonargaon upazilas, around Tarabo and Noapara, still weave in family workshops.
