Panam Nagar
পানাম নগর
A single street of crumbling 19th-century merchant mansions in Sonargaon, frozen in time.
Panam was a prosperous trading street of Hindu cloth merchants, and its two rows of brick mansions date mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The houses mix European columns and arches with Mughal and local details, and many still show traces of coloured glass and stucco. Most were abandoned after Partition and now stand empty along a narrow road with canals behind. Walk slowly and look up at the facades, especially in soft morning light.
How to get there
Bus from Dhaka (Gulistan) to Mograpara on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, then a rickshaw or auto to Panam, about 1.5 hours in total.
Good to know
Combine with the Folk Arts museum nearby. Do not enter fenced, unstable buildings.
