Phulchhari upazila is made up largely of chars in the Brahmaputra, reached by country boat from ghats near Gaibandha. In the dry season the islands are covered in fields of maize, chilli, peanuts and lentils, with houses raised on earth plinths against floods. A boat ride shows how families adapt to a river that constantly builds and erodes land. Wide skies and quiet water make it memorable.

How to get there

Take an auto-rickshaw from Gaibandha town to Phulchhari or Balashi ghat, then hire a boat.

Good to know

Go with a local boatman, carry water and sun protection, and avoid the river in stormy weather.
