In villages along the Sundarbans edge, people who fish, collect honey or cut golpata believe in Bonbibi, a protective forest spirit. Small shrines show her with her brother Shah Jangali and the tiger demon Dakkhin Rai. Both Hindu and Muslim families make offerings to her. Songs and plays retelling her story are still performed in winter, especially around Bengali month Magh.
