About a kilometre north of the Bhawal Rajbari, on the south bank of the Chilai river, lies the place where the Bhawal zamindars cremated their dead. The complex has seven memorial maths, a Shiva temple and tomb-like monuments with name plaques, built of lime, brick-dust mortar and terracotta. Locally it is also called the Raj-Rajeshwari temple, and Kali, Saraswati and Shiva pujas are still held here. It was declared a protected monument in 2017, yet few visitors to Gazipur know it exists.
How to get there
From Joydebpur or the Bhawal Rajbari (DC office) take a rickshaw or auto north to Uttar Chhayabithi.
Good to know
Pair it with the Bhawal Rajbari, which is close by. It is a religious site, so be respectful during puja.
