Persian inscriptions date this mosque to 1667, when Shaista Khan was governor of Bengal, just after the Mughals took Chattogram from the Arakanese. It stands on a raised hill called Ander-Qila, the 'inner fort', which gave the whole neighbourhood its name. In 1761 the British used it to store arms, and it was only returned for prayer in 1855 after local Muslims petitioned. It is still one of the city's best-known mosques, and in 2025 the government decided to restore it.
How to get there
Rickshaw or CNG to Anderkilla in old Chattogram, a short ride from Jamalkhan, Laldighi or the court hill.
Good to know
Non-Muslim visitors should come outside prayer times and ask before entering. Dress modestly. Laldighi and the court hill (Pori Pahar) are close by for a walk.
