Masjidkur sits in Koyra upazila, close to the Kapotaksha river and the Sundarbans. The mosque lay buried under forest and soil until it was uncovered after 1947, which is how it got its name, the mosque that was dug out. Archaeologists link it to followers of Khan Jahan Ali in the late 1400s. Nine domes in three rows rest on thick walls and four stone pillars, and traces of terracotta rosettes and floral scrolls survive around the mihrabs. Few travellers make it this far south, so you will likely have it to yourself.

How to get there

Take a bus from Khulna to Koyra via Paikgachha (a long half-day ride), then a motorbike or easy bike to Masjidkur; locals all know it.

Good to know

It is still a working mosque, so visit outside prayer times and dress modestly. Roads in Koyra can be poor after heavy rain; winter is easiest.
