Garo Culture of Madhupur
মধুপুরের গারো সংস্কৃতি
Matrilineal Garo villages keep their language, harvest rites and Christmas celebrations in the forest.
The Garo, who call themselves Mandi, are one of the indigenous peoples living in and around the Madhupur forest. Their society is matrilineal, with property passing through the mother's line. Many celebrate Wangala, the harvest festival honouring the sun god Saljong, with drums and dance, and Christmas is a major event in the villages. Visiting with a local contact is the respectful way to learn more.
Good to know
Always ask before photographing people; go with someone who knows the community.
