Hakaluki Haor

হাকালুকি হাওর

One of the largest wetlands in Bangladesh, an inland sea in the monsoon and a bird haven in winter.

Hakaluki is a vast haor basin made up of many beels, spreading across parts of Moulvibazar and Sylhet. In the rainy season it fills into a great sheet of water with villages on raised mounds. In winter, as the water falls, thousands of migratory ducks and waders arrive, and fishermen work the remaining beels. Swamp trees such as hijal and koroch dot the landscape.

How to get there

Reach Kulaura or Juri by bus or train, then hire local transport and a boat.

Good to know

For birds, go between December and February with a local guide and binoculars. Life jackets on boats.
