Chilmari River Port
চিলমারী বন্দর
A historic port on the Brahmaputra, celebrated in folk song, with boats to the chars.
Chilmari has been a river port on the Brahmaputra for centuries, and its name lives on in the famous Bhawaiya song about a bullock-cart driver heading to Chilmari bondor. From the Ramna ghat area, boats carry people and goods to the chars and across to Roumari and Rajibpur. The scale of the river here, often several kilometres wide, is impressive. In the dry season, sandbanks stretch to the horizon.
How to get there
Buses run from Kurigram town to Chilmari (about 1 hour); then a rickshaw to the ghat.
Good to know
Hire boats only from the main ghat and agree on the fare first. Carry water and sun protection.
