In the 19th century, British planters forced Bengali farmers to grow indigo, leading to the Indigo Revolt of 1859–60. The ruined neelkuthi at Aowliapur, in Madaripur Sadar upazila, was one of their factory-houses, and parts of its brick walls survive. It is overgrown and unmarked, so ask locals for directions. The quiet ruin tells a story most travellers never hear.
