Ramkot Banashram and the Buddhist temples of Ramu
রামকোট বনাশ্রম ও রামুর বৌদ্ধ বিহার
A hilltop monastery said to be the country's oldest, at the centre of Ramu's many Buddhist temples.
Ramu, just north of Cox's Bazar, has long been a centre of Barua and Rakhine Buddhism, with dozens of viharas and kyangs. Ramkot (Rangkut) Banashram, on a forested hill, is known as the oldest Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh, and tradition links its founding to the emperor Ashoka. Elsewhere in Ramu are colourful wooden and modern temples, including a giant reclining Buddha. Many temples were attacked in 2012 and later rebuilt, and they welcome respectful visitors.
How to get there
Ramu is about 30 minutes by bus or CNG from Cox's Bazar on the Chattogram road; hire a CNG or easy-bike there to go between the temples.
Good to know
Remove shoes before entering and dress modestly. Probarona Purnima (October) brings lantern festivals to Ramu.
