Shotoronji Weaving of Nisbetganj
নিসবেতগঞ্জের শতরঞ্জি
Hand-woven cotton rugs made on simple floor looms in a village on Rangpur's edge.
Shotoronji is a flat-woven cotton rug made on a ground loom, without a shuttle, by passing coloured yarn by hand through the warp. The craft has a long history in Rangpur and centres on the village of Nisbetganj. Traditional designs are bold stripes and geometric patterns, now joined by modern colours for homes and export. Visitors can watch weavers at work and buy rugs, mats and wall hangings directly.
How to get there
Nisbetganj is a short auto-rickshaw ride from Rangpur city centre.
Good to know
Buying from the village workshops supports the weavers directly.
