Mai Saheba Mosque stands in the middle of Sherpur town, beside the government college. Its story goes back about 250 years, to a small abandoned room next to the Tin-Ani zamindars' rent office where a local woman used to pray. Legend says the zamindar sent an elephant to pull the room down, but the elephant sat down in front of it; finding the woman at prayer inside, he apologised and had a mosque built instead. The name Mai Saheba recalls her. Today it is a three-storey building with two tall minarets that holds more than 6,000 worshippers, and it is still being enlarged.
