Maheshkhali Sweet Paan

মহেশখালীর মিষ্টি পান

Betel leaf grown on the hills of Maheshkhali island, known across the country for its mild, sweet taste.

Paan growing is one of the oldest livelihoods on Maheshkhali, the country's only hilly island. Farmers raise the vines in shaded bamboo enclosures called boroj on the slopes, and the leaf is prized for being sweet rather than sharp. A folk song even sings of Maheshkhali's paan, and visitors often pick up a bundle on the way back from the island.
