Shitalpati, literally 'cool mat', is woven from thin strips of the murta plant, split and sometimes dyed. The finished mat is smooth and stays cool to sit or sleep on in the hot months. Jhalokathi's weavers, many of them women, make plain and patterned mats. The district's motto names shitalpati alongside guava, showing its place in local pride.
