Cumilla Khadi

কুমিল্লার খাদি

Hand-spun, handwoven cotton cloth that became a symbol of self-reliance in the independence movement.

Khadi weaving in the Cumilla area grew strongly during the swadeshi and Gandhian movements, when hand-spun cloth was a protest against imported mill fabric. The cloth is coarse, breathable and comfortable in the heat. Today Cumilla's khadi shops sell kurtas, panjabis, saris and fabric by the metre, often in earthy colours, and the name 'Comillar khadi' is known across the country.
