Narail hosts boat races on the Chitra with long, narrow boats driven by dozens of oarsmen singing to keep rhythm. The races are linked to the memory of S.M. Sultan, and crowds fill the banks, rooftops and even trees to watch. Around his birth anniversary the Sultan Mela brings art exhibitions, jari and kobi gaan, wrestling and lathi khela. Dates vary each year, so check locally.

Good to know

Arrive early for a good spot on the bank; the crowds are large.
