Birisiri and the Someshwari River

বিরিশিরি ও সোমেশ্বরী নদী

A clear, sandy river flowing out of the Garo Hills, with the hills of Meghalaya on the horizon.

Birisiri, in Durgapur upazila, is the gateway to Netrokona's hill country. The Someshwari river comes down from Meghalaya with clear water over wide sand and stone beds, and in winter you can walk across parts of it. Sand and coal boats work the river, and the blue hills of India rise just beyond. The Birisiri Cultural Academy introduces the Garo, Hajong and other local peoples.

How to get there

Bus from Dhaka (Mohakhali) to Durgapur/Birisiri, about 5–6 hours; or via Netrokona town by bus or CNG.

Good to know

Stay overnight in Birisiri; hire an auto or motorbike for the china-clay hills and border areas.
