Buffalo herding on the chars

চরের মহিষের বাথান

Herders live with their buffalo on remote sandbars, moving them with the tides and seasons.

On Bhola's chars, herders keep buffalo in open grazing camps called bathan. The animals swim between islands, graze on grass at low tide and are milked by herders who live in simple huts. The milk travels by boat to town to become the famous curd. It is a way of life tied closely to the rhythm of the river.

Good to know

Herders are usually happy to talk; ask before photographing and don't approach the animals closely.
