Lalpur Date Palm Gur

লালপুরের খেজুর গুড়

Winter patali and jhola gur from Natore's date palms, with Lalpur upazila making the most.

Natore has more than six lakh date palms, and each winter gachhis tap them for sap for about two and a half months. The sap is boiled down in wide pans into solid patali or runny jhola gur. Lalpur upazila alone makes far more than any other part of the district, followed by Baraigram and Gurudaspur. Locals eat jhola gur with muri or fresh pitha, and patali travels well as a gift.

Good to know

Ask to see it being boiled at a gachhi's yard; adulterated gur is a known problem, so buy from the maker if you can.
