A remote beach in Rangabali, named after a ship that sank in its silt, with red crabs, fishing boats and a belt of coastal forest.

Jahajmara lies in Moudubi union of Rangabali, about 20 km south of the upazila centre and roughly 30 km east of Kuakata. Locals say a foreign ship ran aground here in the British period and slowly sank into the mud; its wreck was visible for years, and the name means 'struck ship'. The beach runs for several kilometres, and both sunrise and sunset can be watched from the sand. Behind it grows a forest of keora, soila and gewa, and migratory birds arrive in winter. Facilities are minimal, which is the point for most who make the trip.

How to get there

From Patuakhali or Galachipa, travel to Rangabali (road and river crossing), then by motorbike towards Moudubi and Jahajmara; local guides can arrange the trip.

Good to know

Carry food and water and plan to return before dark. Avoid the trip during storm signals or rough-sea warnings.
